In 2022, the Mariupol Drama Theatre was bombed by the Russian forces, and later was restored, renamed, reorganised and financed with the help of the Russian institutions. This theatre is not only used to spread Russian culture in the occupied regions of Ukraine under Russian control, but also to establish the propaganda narrative that this theatre was destroyed by the Ukrainian Nazis. As the General Director, Igor Solonin actively participates in the activities of the theatre and in attracting funding from Russian-appointed government representatives in the occupied Donetsk region.
